Something for every person in a young leader's corner

For students

You care about your community, or you are curious about health, careers, or making a difference. You do not need to be the loudest person in the room. This program is where quiet leaders find their voice.

Ask a teacher, counselor, coach, or pastor to nominate you.

For parents and guardians

Your teen spends the summer learning useful life skills: how to care for their health, how to speak up, and how to work with a team. Sessions are interactive and age-appropriate, with guidance from C2H.

The curriculum

Four areas of growth, built for real life

The Summer Leadership Program is one of the most hands-on health education programs in Travis County. Every session mixes discussion, group activities, and practice, so students learn by doing instead of just listening.

Lessons are culturally responsive. They reflect the families, neighborhoods, and health challenges students actually know.

01

Youth leadership development

Students practice communication, teamwork, and decision making. They learn the everyday habits that make someone a leader others trust.

02

Health literacy and wellness

Students learn everyday wellness habits and how to find, understand, and use reliable health information for themselves and their families.

03

Understanding health care

Where do you go for care, and how do families get help paying for it? Students explore the health system the same way our Medical Access Program helps families navigate it.

04

Community responsibility

Students look at health issues in their own neighborhoods and explore local leadership opportunities to help solve them.

The summer journey

How six weeks build on each other

Each stage prepares students for the next, moving from self, to systems, to service.

  1. Discover

    Building leaders

Students get to know their mentors and each other, set goals, and start building leadership skills and a sense of purpose.

Session theme example: Building leaders and creating community impact

  2. Understand

    Health care access

Students learn how health care works, why some families struggle to get care, and what can change that.

Session theme example: Health care access, community change, and future leaders

  3. Lead

    Creating change

Students connect what they learned to real needs in their community and practice leading as a team.

Why near-peer mentors work

Mentors who were in high school not long ago

Summer sessions are facilitated by college students in the Community Health Leadership Fellowship. Before summer starts, they spend the school year training in health navigation, facilitation, and communication.

Because they are only a few years older, fellows are easy to talk to and relate to. Teens see a real, reachable version of their own future: someone from their community, in college, leading with purpose.

  • TrainedFellows complete structured leadership and facilitation training first.
  • SupportedFellows receive ongoing mentorship and coaching from C2H.
  • RelatableStudents learn from peers who understand their world.

What students take home at the end of the summer

  • Leadership skillsSpeaking up, working in a team, and guiding others toward a goal.
  • Real confidenceThe belief that their voice matters and their ideas can make a difference.
  • Health know-howPractical wellness habits and a clear picture of how health care works.
  • Community awarenessA deeper understanding of the health issues facing their neighborhood.
  • A path forwardA mentor relationship and a first step into a pipeline of future leaders.
From trainee to trainer

Today's student can be tomorrow's mentor

The Summer Leadership Program is built as a pipeline. Students who grow through it can return later as college fellows and mentor the next group of teens. Watch Avonte share what that journey looks like.
